Koala beds are designed in Australia for Australians, with awards for eco-friendly manufacturing, a top-rated design and unique features just like the open-cell foam layer to keep the mattress cooler and give the not too firm, not too soft feel. Koala boasts a lightning-fast delivery that’s even better than Amazon, with 4 hour delivery in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. Everywhere else, delivery remains fast and free. It’s hard to look for a brand new mattress and not hear about the koala mattress. They also claim to be the ‘highest-reviewed’ mattress in Australia.

Sleeping Duck is a mattress in a box company that is based in Australia and has won multiple awards, turned down shark tank investors, plus won Australia’s ‘Best Innovation’ Mattress in a Box for 2019. The quality of Sleeping Duck speaks volumes and matches its achievements. Lately, it’s gone through a significant rebrand and is now called SD Mach II with improved aesthetics, functionality, and a few layer name changes. However, what's excellent is the comfort of the mattress is unchanged, and now it’s more comfortable to interchange the foams, so you get a range of firmness levels. Existing reviews are still certainly valid for this new model.

What are the main differences between SD Mach II and Koala

Hopefully the comparison table above helped you in doing a quick comparison, but let’s dive a bit deeper and cover the main points:

Materials And Construction

The SD Mach II mattress by Sleeping Duck is a hybrid, so it has more of a bounce, better airflow, and has the ‘foam and pocket spring’ feel. It has three comfort layers:

The new Koala mattress is an all-foam mattress, that improves on the old design, making it even better at minimising motion transfer, and with better pressure relieving properties. It has three comfort layers:

It's a tough decision, it's either you prefer a hybrid mattress because of its bounce or you prefer a foam mattress because of the pressure relief and to prevent your partner from waking you up. However, we do not like Sleeping Duck's marketing jargon custom names since they actually basic polyurethane foam and pocket springs.

Where are they made and are they eco friendly

We get alot of questions on this topic, so heres the answer: Both are made in China. Koala use to be made in Australia but since moved manufacturing to China. Sleeping Duck produces there foams in Austrlia but ships them to China for manufacturing.

In terms of eco friendliness, Sleeping Duck isn’t great because of all of the extra air-miles that goes into one mattress. Koala is B-Corp certified, which means we stick to the highest social and environmental standards. In addition, they support 1% for the Planet, which means we give away one percent of the gross sales annually for the benefit of the planet, people and animals. And every mattress purchased helps protect our koalas with the WWF Australia partnership.

Koala was founded in 2015, and Sleeping Duck in 2014. Both have won 'Good Design' and other awards for their contributions to the mattress industry. In recent years, SD hasn't won many awards, but Koala has been awarded the Canstar Blue 'Most Satisfied Customers' Award and a few others.

Sinkage, Bounce, and Motion Isolation

Sinkage and Bounce

Koala’s mattress avoids any significant sinkage or bounce with its custom foams and the durable 3 zoned support layer. In Sleeping Duck's mattress, the amount of sinkage and bounce will vary based on the firmness you choose, although pocket springs will still contribute to bounce regardless. The SD Mach II will be more responsive of the two, but they are both offer minimal sag and sinkage.

Motion Isolation

Both mattresses provide strong motion isolation, but Koala's all-foam construction and ultra-resilient NoPressure Adaptive Core foundation make it the winner. Sleeping Duck's spring base causes a noticeable amount of motion transfer. However, this is mitigated by the springs' individually pocketed design, so it is not a major problem.

Final Verdict:

The Koala mattress is more adorable, is a clear choice when it comes to motion isolation, and has a longer trial period. It’s our pick out of both of thee great options. But everyone is different, if it isn’t for you. You can return it with the 120 night window, it’s a no brainer.

Enjoy having a great night's sleep!
