You can't look for a mattress in Australia and count out the Koala mattress. It consists of two layers of foam. One layer is Koala's 'Kloudcell' foam (flippable and breathable) and the other is a zoned support foam. Koala's patterned foams are open-cell for maximum airflow, which is ideal for Australia's hot, humid summers.
Memory foam retains heat, especially a problem if you live in Queensland, Perth, or the Northern Territory. That’s why Koala’s development team created 'Kloudcell' to give you the pressure-relieving benefits of memory foam without the drawbacks!
The Koala mattress is the best in the business when it comes to partner disturbance. No matter how much your significant other tosses and turns, you won't feel it. Also, you won't wake up your partner, or they will not wake you up if you get up at night.
The shipping time is faster than Amazon with only 4 hour delivery in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. Everywhere else, delivery is still fast and free. It's the most popular memory foam mattress in a box available in Australia.
As a nice touch, they partner with the WWF and donate a percentage of every mattress to koala preservation.
To top it off, Koala has been around since 2015, has excellent customer service and has the best mattress trial periods in Australia, you get a 120-night trial and a 10-year warranty.
You'd like a mattress with no partner disturbance, and a flippable top layer for perfect comfort.

💎Emma Diamond (best for deep sleep)
The Emma Diamond hybrid is for those who want to take their sleep to the next level. The patented comfort layer of Diamond Degree® graphite foam rapidly dissipates excess heat, allowing you a longer deep sleep phase. As you toss and turn during sleep, the foam has a low rolling resistance, which makes it less likely that you will wake up in the middle of the night or be disturbed by your partner.
This mattress' cooling and heat dissipation properties make it ideal for longer restorative sleep, allowing you to spend more time in deep sleep and wake up feeling more refreshed.
Last but not least, you get a 100-night trial, free returns and delivery, and an impressive 10-year warranty.
... You want a premium hybrid mattress that doesn't get hot while you sleep
Newentor Hybrid (best affordable mattress in a box)
The Newentor hybrid is a comfy, good value for money mattress. It features 7 zones of individually wrapped coils that provide 4 types of softness and contours to your head, shoulder, waist, hips, thighs, and lower thighs. This makes it comfortable and great for pressure relief - some describe it as sleeping on a cloud.
The above-mentioned pocket springs provide excellent shock-absorption and resilience while effectively preventing sagging. Moreover, it has a durable edge support system, which prevents you from sliding off the bed and the bed from subsiding when you sit on the edge.
The memory foam comfort layer, which is CertiPUR-US® Certified, sits on top of the springs, adapting to body temperature, storing and releasing heat, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. A memory foam comfort layer is always a plus for side, back, and stomach sleepers.
Encasing the internals is a breathable, dry, and cool fabric. Designed with bamboo charcoal fabric, it protects against bacteria, releases moisture, and helps your body breathe to maintain a healthy skin environment. This also works with the springs to optimise airflow throughout the layers.
Lastly, Newentor is a popular mattress brand worldwide and has expanded to Australia in the last year. They have received stellar reviews and look to be one of the top contenders for the most affordable mattress.
Dusk and Dawn Signature (best luxury)
The Dusk and Dawn Signature mattress has a total of 6 layer mattress (not including edge support and the 3d mesh cover) and an impressive 38 cm thickness and weight of approximately 60 kg (Queen size).
If that's not enough, it’s also made in Australia with Australian wool and materials. The main drawback of this mattress is that it’s a luxury choice and not budget-friendly (depending on how you look at it).
If you’re looking for an Aussie made mattress with all the bells and whistles that will last ten years, then paying $2,500 will equal 0.68 a day over its lifespan, isn't too bad a choice.
Unlike the others on our list, this mattress is not packaged in a box. However, they only ship directly to you, not through a store so you still benefit from the savings.
... You don't want a budget mattress and want to spend more for Aussie made and more layers.
The Noa mattress is a clear winner across all of the reviews - not just because of the excellent price, but it is nice to save some money. Over 1,000 Australians gave this mattress 5 stars on ProductReview.com.au, reviews.io, and noahome.com. But why is it so popular in Australia?
The hybrid design has excellent support with the combination of pocket springs and foam. It's perfect for Aussies wanting a bed that's incredibly comfortable but doesn't want to sink to the bottom of it. If you find the hybrid design to be soft or too firm, you can change your bed within the first 100 nights, free of charge.
When sleeping on the bed, you feel the soft embrace of memory foam with a gentle pushback of the springs giving a medium-firmness which a lot of sleepers prefer and as mentioned before Noa offers a 100-night sleep trial plus a 15-year warranty.
We also love the construction of the bed. The open-cell natural latex is breathable and hypoallergenic, which combines with the gel-infused memory foam for excellent pressure relief. Then, of course, you have the responsive pocket springs for enhanced airflow and lasting durability. This three-layer construction is made with our climate in mind and is excellent of those warm summer nights.
Last but not least, the price. Well, from everything we have found, it's an incredible mattress and one of the best mattresses you can buy; it's even more affordable than most foam mattresses. You might be thinking they might have cut corners with the quality of the bed, but this isn't the case. The materials are OEKO TEX® and REACH certified. Plus, the components are independently tested by SGS, adhering to the highest standards of manufacturing.
Overall, we love the bed and think you will too. You get all of the perks that come with a top of the range mattress in a box, free shipping, risk-free trial, excellent warranty length, etc.

Deal: $300 off
The Macoda mattress seems like a hidden gem in the mattress in box industry. Macoda was started back in 2018 by two young Australians, and it's grown massively in popularity, just not as popular as the Koala mattress (yet). However, we think this underdog in the bedding industry is worth your consideration when looking for a new bed.
Macoda has won Australia's "Best Comfort" Mattress in a Box two years in a row because of their comfortable hybrid design combining advanced foams and pocket springs, giving you support and bounce. The structure makes this one of the best mattresses for good posture, plus the layers are also interchangeable to fit your sleeping style, offering a medium (5/10) to a medium-firm feel (6.5/10).
The construction is to the highest high standards with all the polyurethane foams being Certi-PUR-US certified, and the materials being to Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified. Meaning it's interdependently tested for the presence of over 300 harmful substances. So you can rest assured, it's safe for you and children to sleep on, without having to worry about toxic chemicals coming off the mattress.
A few final thoughts, the bed, has easy to carry side handles which are a nice touch on the already great design. You get free delivery, 100-night trial, free returns, 10-year warranty, and an incredibly comfortable mattress. Plus an extra 10% of the Macoda mattress when clicking through our link. We also highly recommend the Macoda pillow if you're looking for an upgrade.

Eva (best mattress trial)
Eva is a hybrid mattress designed to keep you fresh and comfy by combining springs, latex, gel, and high-density foams. Eva won 'Best Overall' Mattress in Box for 2019 and even has excellent reviews from people in Queensland, Perth and Cairns saying it keeps them cool in summer nights.
The breathable materials used like gel-infused memory foam and the open-cell natural latex underneath give great support and are designed with warm Australian nights in mind. These layers combined with the springs is the reason we think it's the best bed for hot sleepers and the best mattress for stomach sleepers in Australia.
Summing it up, Eva is excellent for maximising support without compromising on letting the mattress breathe, making it great for people who are naturally hot when sleeping but prefer to sleep cold and comfortable. Eva has a no-strings-attached return and refund policy with a 365 night trial period.
Noa Luxe (unique hybrid)
Noa has made this list twice, but this time with their Noa Luxe mattress. This is the premium version of the best selling original Noa mattress. You still get the same excellent service and quality as the original. However, you get some special extra layers like natural bamboo charcoal latex and micro coils.
The micro coils add extra comfort and support while increasing airflow. The bamboo charcoal latex is eco-friendly, fragrance-free, allergen-free, and non-toxic. Also, it’s a super material for absorbing excess moisture and repels odours.
… You want a unique high-quality mattress with comfort and support from 2 layers of springs.
Ergoflex (best for bad backs)
The Ergoflex 5G Memory Foam Mattress is the original mattress in a box company. They have stood the test of time, and unlike most mattress in a box brands they have been in business longer than the 10-year warranty of their beds.
Initially, the Ergoflex was designed to compete with the popular TEMPUR mattress, but at a more affordable rate. They did this by coming up with the bed in a box design, cutting out the expensive showrooms, and extra shipping costs passing on the saving to you.
However, you will find this mattress slightly more expensive than other brands, costing $1,499, making it one of the priciest on our list. Yet, not everything is judged on price; this bed has over 3000 5-star reviews on Choice and Product Review. Plus the design is made to have orthopaedic pressure-relief making it the number one pick for the best bed for back backs category.
Ergoflex is recommended by an Australian back doctor saying "I recommend this mattress to patients as part of a multi-modal treatment for back and neck pain." The reason we recommend it for Australians with back backs, and so do many other people, is because of the billions of spherical shaped open cell Ergoflex™ high-density foams, making it designed to be an orthopaedic pressure-reducing mattress.
Overall, Ergoflex has mastered the art of pressure relief; it has a couple of drawbacks being only a 30-day trial and is slightly more expensive than it's competition. Still, you might be able to find it on a sale saving a few bucks so make sure you check out the claim deal button.
... You need more pressure relief, or you always wanted a TEMPUR, for a fraction of the cost.
Ecosa (best mattress for kids)
Isn't every mattress great for kids? Well yes but Ecosa stands out because of 3 reasons: It's customisable firmness, breathability, and the waterproof cover. Children tend to be more restless at night and find it harder to cool down, so the G7 gel-infused foam and open-cell foam helps with the airflow and contracts this problem.
We love the unique feature of a waterproof cover on the Ecosa mattress, making it great for spills or accidents, which Kids are more prone than adults. The cover also helps kids with allergies because the inner cover has tightly woven microfilaments to protect against dust mites and bacteria.
And lastly, you can change up the firmness of the bed from - medium, medium-firm, and firm. Which is especially useful for growing kids who might prefer a different firmness after a year or for anybody who is a fussy sleeper.
... You need a bed for growing kids.
Sleeping Duck (SD Mach II)
Due to the high-quality materials used, the SD Mach II is one of the most expensive mattresses on the market. The original Sleeping Duck has six layers and two different comfort levels available medium and firm.
The new SD Mach II has 3 layers and because you can adjust each section of the middle foam layers, you get a personalised night's sleep. With these adjustments it can become the best firm mattress for your hips and shoulders.
Sleeping Duck was awarded the top mattress in independent testing by CHOICE (2018). However, the new SD Mach II model hasn't received an award. If money isn't an option, and you want a customisable mattress then the SD Mach II might be the pick. You will have a great night's sleep on this bed despite the price.
Onebed is an all-foam mattress known for its softness and support, making it excellent for side sleepers. OneBed's interchangeable top layer can be changed for a medium, medium-firm, or firm nights sleep. You can switch between memory foam and latex, both having their benefits.
Using latex will increase the airflow on the surface, improving breathability. Plus this will make the bed towards the firmer side and give you some more bounce.
Changing to the two different levels of memory foam's will give you a softer feel than the latex layer and give you more pressure relief. The drawback is that memory foam retains heat, and can be soft for some people.
OneBed also comes with a 15-year warranty, which is better than most beds you buy online. However, every mattress on this list has at least a 10-year warranty.
The queen mattress costs $1050, so it's more costly than most brands but still competitive, and you get a 125 night trial period.
The Emma mattress has won over 30 awards across Europe, and you can find them in 20 different countries with over 400,000 people sleeping on them, impressive! And now the wait is over, and you can purchase them in Australia, but is the Emma mattress any good?
Yes! The quality German engineering that has gone into the bed has proven itself across Europe (Europe's most awarded mattress in 2019) and now it's available here. We were lucky enough to try one out for a few months, and the 3 layers of foam distribute your weight evenly because of the 7 support zones design, making it a dream to fall asleep. Plus, for the price it’s the best affordable medium firm mattress.
We must say it does feel firmer than your standard all-foam mattress at around a 6/10 medium-firm feel, Aussies compare the Emma or Koala because they are similar in many ways. Also, the service we received was excellent, but to double-check it wasn't biased we looked through the reviews on productreview.com.au and Choice to make sure other people had the same experience. And, there are overall positive comments on customer service, comfort, and price.
If you've got babies or toddlers, the Emma mattress is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 – Class 1 certified on all of its layers – meaning it's eco-friendly and free from harmful substances. However, the bed does come from Germany so we’re not too overly sure on the environmental impact getting it here.
Moreover, the Emma mattress has same-day delivery in metro areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. And, we think you will hear a lot more about the customer service and excellent quality Emma provides to Australia.
Update: Emma won Choices Best Mattress of 2020, and 2021 award too.
