The Koala Plus is Koala’s flippable mid-range mattress and the successor to the discontinued Calm As. Its stand-out feature is Flippable Firmness: unzip the cover and flip the internal Kloudcell layer to switch between medium-firm and firm. A reversible seasonal cover adds a cooling side for summer and a cosy side for winter, and five support zones plus a Zero Disturbance base round out a 28cm all-foam build.

On paper it is a well-made, adaptable bed. In practice it carries a premium price with no standing discount, a 120-night trial that is shorter than several rivals, and an all-foam feel that gives up the bounce and airflow of a spring hybrid. In this honest review we break down how it is built, how it feels, what it costs across all six sizes, and where your money goes further.

If you want the short version: the Koala Plus is a solid mattress, but at this price the hybrids we rate highest – the Origin, the Emma Comfort and the value-led Newentor Hybrid – give most sleepers more bed for less money.

Koala Plus  ★★★★ 4.0/5

Firmness: Flippable (medium-firm / firm)  |  Queen: $1,650  |  Trial: 120 nights  |  Warranty: 10 years

How it scores

Quality4.0
Value3.5
Comfort4.0
Ease of use4.5
Perks4.0

Quality and comfort are good for an all-foam bed and the flippable firmness is genuinely easy to use; value is the weak point because you pay full RRP with no standing sale and a shorter 120-night trial, so hybrids at the same price score higher on what you get for your money.

The bottom line

The Koala Plus is a genuinely adaptable all-foam mattress: flip the Kloudcell layer for two firmness levels, flip the cover for two seasons, and enjoy strong motion isolation for couples. But at $1,650 for a queen with a 120-night trial and no standing discount, it is priced like a premium hybrid without the bounce or airflow of one. Most sleepers will get more support, better cooling and better value from the Origin, Emma Comfort or Newentor Hybrid.

How we review mattresses

We assess every mattress on the same five criteria – quality, value, comfort, ease of use and perks – using the brand’s published construction, aggregated owner reviews from ProductReview.com.au and CHOICE, and hands-on assessment of the feel, cover and setup. We re-check pricing on the brand’s live page at each update.

Who the Koala Plus is best for

The Koala Plus suits couples who want strong motion isolation and sleepers who like to fine-tune firmness and adapt to the seasons without buying a new bed. The flippable layer and reversible cover are real, useful features and the foam feel is comfortable.

For most other sleepers, though, our affiliate-tested favourites are the smarter buy at this price. If you want zoned pocket-spring support and better airflow, the Origin is our top-rated hybrid. If you want a balanced all-rounder from a global brand with a longer trial, look at the Emma Comfort. And if budget is the priority, the Newentor Hybrid delivers hybrid support for far less. Compare them all in our best mattress in Australia guide.

Pros

  • Flippable Firmness in one bed: unzip the cover and flip the Kloudcell layer to switch between medium-firm and firm at home, no tools needed
  • Reversible seasonal cover: an organic-cotton side for winter and a CoolThread cooling-yarn side for summer
  • Strong motion isolation: the Zero Disturbance base means a restless partner is unlikely to wake you
  • Fast free delivery: free metro delivery with same-day options in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide

Cons

  • All-foam, not a hybrid: it lacks the bounce and edge-to-edge airflow of a pocket-spring bed like the Origin
  • Premium price, no standing sale: you generally pay full RRP, and same-priced hybrids give you more support and airflow for the money
  • Shorter 120-night trial: several rivals, including the Emma, offer a longer risk-free trial
  • 10-year warranty is only average: many competitors back their beds for 15 years or more

Koala Plus

"I bought two double mattresses for each of my teenage boys. They said they are having the best sleep ever. My problem is trying to get them out of bed now.Everyone at Koala were very helpful, I had a lot of questions before buying and they were all answered professionally. Even the delivery guy was fantastic."  Koala Review

What the Koala Plus is made from

The Koala Plus is a 28cm all-foam mattress built around adjustability. From the top:

  1. Reversible seasonal cover: an organic-cotton side for cold nights and a CoolThread cooling-yarn side that Koala says sleeps cooler for hot nights.
  2. 8cm Kloudcell comfort layer: Koala’s signature foam infused with cooling gel; it is flippable between a medium-firm and a firm side.
  3. Five-zone support core: high-density foam zoned to give the lower back and hips extra support.
  4. Zero Disturbance base: a dense foundation tuned for motion isolation.

The mattress ships compressed in a box and expands within a few hours. The comfort layer and cover are both reversible, which is what gives the Plus its two-feel, two-season flexibility.

What the Koala Plus feels like

Support and firmness

With the Kloudcell layer flipped to its medium-firm side (around 6.5/10) the Plus holds the spine level with a cushioned contour that suits most back and side sleepers. Flip it to firm (around 7/10) for more support, better for stomach sleepers and heavier bodies. It is a real adjustment, though not as fine-grained as a three-layer system. Sleepers who want zoned pocket-spring support will still prefer a hybrid like the Origin.

Partner disturbance

This is where the Plus shines. As an all-foam bed with a Zero Disturbance base it isolates motion very well, so a restless partner or a shift-worker getting up early is unlikely to wake you.

Suitability for hot sleepers

The CoolThread cover side and gel-infused Kloudcell foam help, and Koala markets the Plus as sleeping cooler than leading online brands. Even so, all-foam beds trap more heat than pocket-spring hybrids; dedicated hot sleepers will run cooler on the airflow of the Newentor Hybrid or Origin.

Off-gassing

There is a mild new-foam smell on unboxing that clears within a day in a ventilated room.

How much does the Koala Plus cost?

The Koala Plus starts at $1,050 for a single and runs to $2,290 for a super king, with a queen at $1,650 and a king at $1,990. That is premium-hybrid money for an all-foam bed, and Koala rarely discounts the Plus, so you usually pay full RRP. At this price we think the zoned support and airflow of a pocket-spring hybrid represent better value for most sleepers.

"Literally everything about this mattress was awesome. Same day delivery with tracking, the affordable price tag and the mattress itself is comfortable.. And the best part? I can't feel it when my partners gets out of bed in the morning. What more could you want!" Customer Review

Koala Plus

Ordering and delivery

The Koala Plus ships free to metro areas across Australia, with same-day delivery available in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide on in-stock orders. It arrives compressed in a box (roughly 100 x 43 x 43cm, about 23kg to carry) that you slide onto your base before cutting the plastic; it expands within a few hours. Returns during the trial are handled by Koala.

Trial, warranty and shipping

  • Trial: 120 nights, full refund if it does not suit you.
  • Warranty: 10 years.
  • Delivery: free metro; same-day in major cities.
  • Feature: flippable dual firmness plus reversible seasonal cover.

A 120-night trial and 10-year warranty are fair but no longer market-leading. If a longer safety net matters to you, the Emma Comfort offers a longer trial.

How long does the Koala Plus last?

With a 10-year warranty and high-density foams, the Koala Plus should last around the typical 7–10 year mattress lifespan. Rotating it head-to-toe every few months and using a mattress protector will help it hold its shape. Note the warranty is shorter than the 15-year cover some rivals offer.

Koala Plus FAQ

Can you really change the firmness?

Yes. Unzip the cover and flip the internal Kloudcell layer to switch between a medium-firm and a firm feel. It takes a few minutes and needs no tools, though it is two settings rather than a full range.

Is the Koala Plus good for side sleepers?

On its medium-firm side it cushions the shoulders and hips reasonably well for side sleeping. Side sleepers who want more contour or zoned relief may prefer a hybrid like the Origin.

Does the Koala Plus sleep hot?

The CoolThread cover and gel-infused foam help, but as an all-foam bed it traps more heat than a pocket-spring hybrid such as the Newentor.

Is there a better-value alternative?

Yes. At the Plus’s price you can buy a zoned hybrid like the Origin or Emma Comfort, or save money with the Newentor Hybrid, all of which we rate more highly for value.

Koala Plus

How the Koala Plus compares

  • Koala Plus vs Origin: the Origin is a zoned pocket-spring hybrid with more bounce, better airflow and, at a similar price, better all-round value – our top pick for most sleepers.
  • Koala Plus vs Emma Comfort: the Emma Comfort matches the Plus on comfort but adds a longer trial and a well-supported feel from a global brand, usually for less.
  • Koala Plus vs Newentor Hybrid: the Newentor Hybrid is the budget winner – hybrid support and airflow for a fraction of the Plus’s price.
